Protecting Alpine biodiversity

In September 2024, CIPRA launched two innovative Interreg projects: LiveAlpsNature and AlpsLife. These projects are helping to protect biodiversity in the Alps and meet the growing challenges posed by the climate crisis and intensive tourism.

LiveAlpsNature: visitor management for sustainable tourism

LiveAlpsNature is developing new concepts for visitor management in Alpine protected areas that are under increasing pressure from tourism. The aim is to protect biodiversity and at the same time promote people’s well-being. Leisure activities and management measures based on the One Health approach are being tested in selected pilot regions. The results will be developed as open-source solutions together with the Outdooractive app, then made available to a broad target audience, such as tourism associations, tour operators and end users. The project is part of the Interreg Alpine Space programme and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

AlpsLife: standardised monitoring of Alpine biodiversity

Different national monitoring systems currently make it difficult to protect biodiversity. The “AlpsLife – observe globally, act locally” project focuses on Alpine-wide biodiversity monitoring. Under this project, research institutions and protected areas are jointly developing ecological indicators. This Alpine-wide biodiversity monitoring helps to identify priority areas worthy of protection and to support policymakers in their decisions. The project is part of the Interreg Alpine Space programme. It is also co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

“Both projects show that the protection of Alpine biodiversity can only succeed through innovative, cross-border and coordinated approaches – for the benefit of people and nature alike”, says Jakob Dietachmair, Director  of CIPRA Lab.
