Getting stones rolling
Workshops, excursions, art cards, podcasts: the results of the CIPRA “SteinReich” project, which focused on drystone walls and cairns, are diverse and tangible.
Stones are an extremely valuable habitat for animals and plants. As part of SteinReich, between spring 2023 and autumn 2024, guidance was given to people to create drystone walls and cairns in seven pilot regions. The regions also organised lectures, excursions and produced brochures for various target groups, such as young farmers and schoolchildren, and provided information boards for the stone elements.
“The project has set numerous stones rolling in the pilot regions; it also aims to encourage people to create such habitats in their own neighbourhoods and do something good for certain plants and animals. Together, we are creating more and more habitats for those animals that move from one place to another in search of shelter”, explains Magdalena Holzer, project manager at CIPRA International.
Interviews with representatives of the pilot regions and background information on the SteinReich project, which was funded by the Carline, Valüna and Binding foundations, can be heard in the latest episode of the CIPRA podcast. A different approach – namely an artistic one – was also taken by participants in the art workshop at the Liechtenstein School of Art. The resulting drawings, watercolours and monotypes open up a very special view of the stone habitats and are available as postcards from the Netzwerkstatt Alpen in Schaan.
