Creative spaces for change

Inspire and empower: culture plays an essential role in the transition to an environmentally and socially just society. The second international meeting of the Erasmus+ project CultureAlps in Rovereto, Italy, at the end of March showed exactly what this can look like.

“Sustainability begins with changing our social relationships. Because they form the foundation of our society”, says Maja Kogovšek from CIPRA International, summarising an important insight from the Erasmus+ project meeting of CultureAlps. At the end of March, representatives from La Foresta, Domus, inatura Dornbirn and CIPRA International met in Rovereto/I to discuss the importance of culture in sustainable change. The exchange showed the importance of cooperation, listening and spaces for encounter. Communication about planetary crises should not be paralysing, but inspiring and empowering instead. This is exactly where cultural events and projects can come in.

Offering tangible solutions

Cooking together, environmental education workshops, community gardens and clothing swaps: the La Foresta community academy in Italy provides a wide range of practical approaches to environmental and social change. It offers space to experiment, build relationships, exchange ideas and thus experience and live sustainability together. Its new project, “Station for Transformation”, for example, aims to transform the Rovereto train station into an open, community-oriented space for climate and biodiversity issues.
