Plans for a ski resort in the Natura 2000 region of northern Spain
According to plans by the regional government of Castile-León a new winter sports resort with ski-lift capacities for 32,000 visitors an hour is to be built in the northern Spanish provinces of Cantabria, Leon and Palencia.
The plans for the resort with a total of 80 km of ski runs in a part of the Cantabrian Mountains designated as particularly worthy of protection are not without controversy. Besides the questionable financial sustainability of the resort, Spanish environmental associations fear irreversible ecological and aesthetic consequences for the mountain region, which is also one of the refugial areas of the endangered Cantabrian brown bear.
