Sporting commemoration of a ranger

The 29th edition of the “Danilo Re Memorial” took place from 16 to 19 January 2025 in Scuol in the Swiss National Park. This year, for the first time, CIPRA took part in the international meeting of representatives of Alpine protected areas and organisations.

The national park ranger and botanist Danilo Re died in 1995 as a result of an accident at work. The “Danilo Re Memorial” honours him annually by promoting international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge between those working in nature and environmental protection in the Alps. This year’s memorial was especially dedicated to the recently deceased colleague and friend Mauro Fissore of the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime who, with his commitment and musical contributions, was the “soul” of the Danilo Re Memorial.

The event was organised by the Swiss National Park in collaboration with ALPARC (Alpine Network of Protected Areas) and welcomed around 270 participants to Scuol in the Lower Engadine. In addition to the opportunity to exchange ideas in a seminar on current scientific topics that affect the everyday lives of park rangers, the highlight of the event was the challenging sporting competition held in the icy cold. CIPRA put together two dedicated teams that, like everyone else, competed in the disciplines of ski mountaineering, giant slalom, cross-country skiing and sport shooting. However, despite their personal best performances, they were ranked behind the well-trained national park professionals, into whose circle they were warmly welcomed.

“We are overwhelmed by the straightforward yet international nature of your Alpine hospitality: we thank you for the invitation and will be happy to return, of course with much higher ambitions – that’s a promise!” says Kaspar Schuler, Executive Director of CIPRA International, with a grin.
