Point of view: Holidays have a lasting impact
Holidays mean time out, a change of scenery, relaxation. But where and how we spend our holidays doesn’t just affect us; it also has an impact on other people, regions, the climate and nature. Magdalena Holzer, project manager at CIPRA International, is convinced that travelling is a decision that brings with it with great responsibility.
Of course, getting in a car or on a plane is convenient. But the journey to our holiday destination, our behaviour once we arrive and the associated consumption of resources all leave their mark – on nature, on the region and on the people who live there. Holidays are therefore not purely a private decision, but always a question of collective quality of life. The good news is that sustainable alternatives are often closer, easier and more attractive than many people think. Anyone who has explored Europe via Interrail or experienced how easy it is to rent a bike or buy a train ticket using an app will be happy to use such services again. Projects such as YOALIN are doing valuable pioneering work in this area. Since 2018, we have been enabling young people to discover the Alps in a climate-friendly way by train and by bus.
Our YOALIN travellers and ambassadors are becoming important role models: they demonstrate how easy and enriching sustainable travel can be. They inspire not only their peers, but also their parents and grandparents – and pass on these experiences to the next generation. As a result, climate-friendly and socially sustainable travel that respects regional culture and nature is becoming increasingly commonplace. This shows that behavioural change can be achieved by removing barriers and facilitating positive experiences.
Interested parties can apply for YOALIN 2025 until 15 May 2025 and embark on a unique journey of discovery through the Alps. And, even if you are over 27, an Interrail ticket is available to everyone – adults, seniors and families. Perhaps now is the right time to make your next holiday more sustainable.
