Italy to chair Alpine Convention in 2025

Italy is preparing to chair the Alpine Convention for the period 2025-2026, while Liechtenstein and Austria will co-chair the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) in 2025. Sustainability and cross-border cooperation are the focus of both initiatives.

The Slovenian presidency of the Alpine Convention will be followed next year by Italy in this role. Some of the programme’s priorities have already been presented, including the protection and promotion of Alpine biodiversity, climate protection and the safeguarding of quality of life in the Alps. The first events are planned for March 2025 in Bolzano, including the closed meeting of the Alpine Convention and a meeting to coordinate the Italian delegation. As the host of these events, the region of South Tyrol will emphasise its role as a strategic partner of the Convention.

Austria and Liechtenstein to chair Eusalp
In 2025, Austria and Liechtenstein will jointly chair the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP). This multilateral agreement aims to tackle key challenges together: the sustainable use of resources, the expansion of environmentally friendly mobility and the prevention of natural disasters. A particular focus is on integrating youth perspectives and involving local stakeholders more closely in order to improve the quality of life in the Alpine region. With their motto “cooperation empowers transformation”, Austria and Liechtenstein want to demonstrate that joint European initiatives can promote sustainable development in the Alpine region.
