Innovation to counter emigration
Emigration and the brain drain in the Alpine region: a new EU project involving CIPRA aims to counteract this trend. It is testing innovative governance models to strengthen mountain regions and create a win-win situation for regions of origin, destinations and young emigrants.
The Alpine region faces the challenge of retaining young people in the long term and offering them attractive prospects for the future. The Interreg Alpine Space project OUT4INGOV is developing innovative governance approaches to respond to demographic change and create sustainable solutions for regions at risk of depopulation. New participation formats are designed to involve young people in political processes and enable them to play an active role in shaping their home regions.
An emerging network
OUT4INGOV was officially launched on 11 February 2025 in Trento, Italy. Representatives from several Alpine countries came together to plan the first steps of the project and develop joint strategies. The focus was on exchanging best practices as a basis for the project and jointly designing a workflow with partners from local authorities, research institutions and civil society. The first project measures are to be implemented in the coming months.
“OUT4INGOV gives young people a voice and shows how innovative governance models can strengthen the long-term attractiveness of Alpine regions”, says project manager Hanna Öllös. “Our goal is to create an interconnected framework that not only supports young people, but also the communities they are leaving and those they are joining.”
