Northeast Asia inspired by the Alpine Ecological Network
In South Korea, China and Japan activities have been started in favour of ecological connectivity. The major protected areas of these countries, the Ministry for environment of South Korea and other key stakeholders have been convinced by the importance of connected habitats thanks to the successful initiatives in the Alps.
The northeast Asian countries intend to put ecological connectivity on the agenda of the IUCN World Conservation Congress to be held in September. Therefore they invited ALPARC's president and Berchtesgaden National Park's director Michael Vogel in April to a work meeting where he presented the results of the ECONNECT project. Already two years before Vogel had the opportunity to travel to Asia and to introduce connectivity as a new topic to his Korean colleagues. One of the first actions to take in Asia would be the creation of an Asian network of protected areas, similar to the already existing networks in the Alps and Carpathians.
