Publication on the challenges facing mountain regions

The Institute for Mountain Research at Innsbruck University/A has published a book on man and the environment in mountain areas under the English original title Challenges for Mountain Regions - Tackling Complexity. Besides the Alps it also examines mountain areas in the Andes and Patagonia.

The book reports on life in the mountains, the daily confrontation with natural hazards and the impact of global change in general and climate change in particular. Examples illustrate the challenges faced by mountain areas, such as the differences in urban and rural development, transit traffic, and potential paths to sustainable development. It also examines the need for synergies between economy and ecology.
The publication also features research institutions and programmes involved in mountain research as well as their instruments, methods and results.
